Hold on to your pointy witches hats
Weeks after its release, the Wicked movie still dominates most cinema screens in the UK. In line with the enormous success, director Jon Chu decided to split the film into two parts, just like in the movie Bad musical is split into two acts. However, Nessarose actor Marissa Bode has revealed a major plot change in Wicked part two that will deviate significantly from the musical’s original story. Spoilers, you have been warned!
If you already know how the tragic story of Wicked ends, you know that after inheriting the title of Governor of Munchkinland, Nessarose begins a bit of a downfall. She becomes paranoid about Boq’s feelings for Glinda, and in turn takes away the Munchkins’ rights to prevent him from leaving her.
Nessarose, who uses a wheelchair, receives an unexpected visit from her sister Elphaba and gains the ability to walk thanks to her enchanted shoes (the silver ones she got at the beginning of the film). However, this scene will look very different in the second Wicked film.
Marissa told me People that even though she “wasn’t there” for the actual script change, she said the director told her, “Hey, we changed this part this way so it felt less like a validation moment.”
So instead of having Nessarose beg her sister to “fix” her disability, the scene will instead focus “on the magic in general and the magic of the story.”
Marissa told me Variety in September: “Authentic casting and showing an authentic person with a disability is very important, but it is also very important how we are portrayed. I am certainly very happy with the changes that have been made.”
Marissa also said she was happy that the longer runtime of the Wicked films allowed more of Elphaba and Nessarose’s bond to be explored. “It definitely helps to raise Nessarose’s profile because she’s not just the bratty, spoiled little sister,” she said.
“Of course it’s a beautiful musical and I love the stage musical, but you don’t really see the little moments in the bond between the two sisters, or just their love for each other. You see that more in the film,” Marissa explained. It’s true, it’s just adorable to see Elphaba taking care of Nessarose.
“And I think that’s really important because it makes what happens in the second movie all the more devastating. It humanizes Nessa as a character and shows how much she cares about people. I think it was a great decision.”
November 2025 can’t come soon enough!
